Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate, or okg is a combination of the amino acid ornithine and alpha-ketoglutaric acid (akg). Akg is an important component in the Krebs’ cycle, the chief energy producing cycle in the body. Free-form ornithine has been shown in some studies to help the body improve its muscle-to -fat ratio, another important aspect of athletic training. The combination provides athletes with a potent edge. Okg spares muscles the need to break down their bcaas (branch chain amino acids) in order to generate glutamine, an important energy fuel. The glutamine is generated when akg combines with ammonia released during intense muscle activity. This ammonia scavenging property of akg is doubly beneficial because excess free ammonia can be harmful.
